A Japanese study involving thousands of people as a sample to prove it. Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals that help prevent cell damage that can cause disease. Researchers have studied the effects of green tea on everything from cholesterol to the risk of certain cancers. So far, the results are varied, according to Reuters.For the latest research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers decided to investigate the question of whether green tea drinkers have a lower risk of frailty and disability as they enter old age or older.Tomata Yasutake and colleagues from the Graduate School of Medicine Tohoku University followed nearly 14,000 seniors aged 65 years or more, for three years.The researchers found that those who most often drink green tea is the least developed "functional disability", or problems with daily activities or basic needs, such as dressing or bathing.According to a deeper explanation, nearly 13 percent of adults who drank less than a cup of green tea per day can be functionally disabled compared with 7 percent of people who drank at least five cups a day."Consumption of green tea was significantly associated with lower risk of accidents caused by functional decline, even after adjustment for possible confounding factors," wrote Tomata and colleagues in the research report cited by Reuters.However, this study does not prove that the only green tea that can make people alert while they are elderly. Green tea lovers generally have a healthy diet, including eating more fresh fish, vegetables and fruit. In addition, they generally have higher levels of education, a lower likelihood of smoking, the chances of heart attacks and fewer strokes, and high mental acuity. They also tend to be more socially active and have more friends and family to be reliable.But even if these factors are also taken into account, the green tea itself is strongly associated with a lower risk of disability, the researchers said. People who drink an average of three or four cups per day had a risk of bodily function decreased 25 percent lower.Although it is unclear how green tea offers the possibility of prevention to the decline of bodily functions, Tomata team noted that one recent study found green tea extract seems to improve leg muscle strength of elderly women
